How do I install a 617 diesel in a Land Rover?

Submitted by frans on 1 December 2006 - 9:13am.
Hello, I have several 300TDs. My question is, I would like to take the 5 cylinder turbo diesel engine, mate it with a manual 4 wheel drive transmission (toyota sr5, 4 runner trans.), and install this into a 4 door Land Rover defender wagon. Has this ever been done? Is there any information you may have on folks doing conversions of this type? Will it adversely effect the mercedes engine? Sounds crazy I know but I really really like the 5 cylinder turbo engine and also like my defender. The two combined seems like it would make a great combination. Thanks, Frans

Land Rover conversion challenges

Hi Frans, they say anything is possible, but you might want to weigh in the effort and cost on this one. The big challenge will be to mate the 617 to a manual 4 wheel drive transmission. It is nigh impossible to find a factory manual transmission flywheel for the 617 engine. And even if you found one from a 617 non turbo euro engine you would have to get a clutch and pressure plate mounted that would work with the transmission you choose. Then you have to machine an engine to transmission mounting adapter plate, and make certain everything is balanced, spaced properly, and aligned correctly. Of course, if you had a really good machine shop and an open wallet you could probably pull it off.

the standard transmission convertion would be a real challange it would be easier to go the automatic route. a nice setup would be mating a 700 r4 gm transmission and np 207 transfer case out of a a mid 80's s-10 pickup. depends which side the front diff is on.

Look at transmissionadapters .com they have a plate to adapt the 617 Merc to the 700r4 and advaced adapters has kits to mate that tranny to several different transfer cases
