1975 300D loud clacking sound doesn't go away

I have a 1975 300D it is very difficult to start and when I do get it to start there is a load clacking noise that doesn't change when engine is idle or at higher RPM's. The noise is constant, I have checked for fuel ditribution and it seems fine to the injectors. I wanted to know if it could be a timing issue, when it is running and I shift into drive it dies, and if I don't keep my foot on the pedal it dies. Seems to run rough, This car has sat for a long time and has not been started. The engine dosen't seem to have much power. Thanks in advance for your help. Jack

Hi Jack, there are quite a number of things that could be causing the problems you are describing. You will need to do some diagnostic tests to narrow down the causes. I have a tuning guide that will help with a number of these as well as a hard starting and diesel knock diagnostic guides specific to your engine. CLICK HERE to see a summary of these manuals.
