Find the bad noise on all diesels 1955 to 1993 with emphasis on 69 to 85.
Applies to the following diesel models from 1955 to 1993: Ponton, 110, 115, 116, 123, 126, 201 and 124. Lets face it. Diesel engines make noise. Some of the clatter and knock they make is normal. Other banging and clanging noises are not.
If you have lived with your diesel for a long time, you should instinctively know what is normal. It is when you start hearing noises that you have not heard before then you should be concerned. If you haven't lived with a diesel for very long, then it is hard to know which noises are acceptable and which are not.
In this diagnostic guide I will attempt to describe and analyze every possible abnormal noise that I have found associated with Mercedes diesels. There might even be some I miss, but I will cover all the most common ones. Along with helping you isolate the cause of the noise, I will direct you to the appropriate cure. This will include all forms of rattling, knocking, clinking, clunking, ticking, squeaking, squealing, and puffing.
Let me caution you. DO NOT IGNORE any strange diesel noise. It may be an indicator of worse things to come. And that could be very detrimental to your car and your pocketbook.
