WVO-Which types are best?...

Submitted by rioleo on 23 April 2007 - 9:58pm.

In my limited experience with WVO I have encountered several kinds and types out there, It seems that it is universal knowledge to stick with what originally was 100% pure oil of some kind and to stay away from the hydrogenated stuff. My question goes further... I like to know what are the better WVOs? and what kind of WVOs to avoid?. Maybe on a "TOP 10" format. Corn, Soybean, Rice, Cottonseed, Canola, Peanut, Palmoil, etc, etc, etc. If there is any written information about this please refer, this will help all current and future lipid users.

Different types of WVO

I've had quite good results with straight soy. Sometimes _surprisingly_ low gel point. Ran it on a simple single-tank system already installed in my "new" 1983 300D through some quite chilly weather, down into the 40s and even upper 30s overnight. Of course, I'm out on the California coast, so nothing too hardcore weather-wise... But it got me to work every day. New Duratherms (and a cleaning-out with one of those last spiral reamers) await the veggie turbodiesel - as soon as I have a free weekend, that is!

Can't wait to hear some other experiences with oil types.

Any more SVO experts out there?

I'm surprised there haven't been any additional posts on this thread! Doesn't anyone have some more "geeky" data about the specific gel points, etc of various veg oil types? I'm sure everyone would love to hear... :-) I've been trying canola oil to see if any difference from the soy, and it 'seems' to stay a bit more fluid after a chilly night... But this could be my imagination...! Yep, some hard numbers on specific gel points would be AWESOME if anyone's got that type of data!

WVO-What types to avoid?

It has been nearly a year and my original inquiry was prompted when I ran rice oil from a sushi place... it idled sweet so I went for a test drive and when I stepped on the throtle I got no power(it was weird...diet oil?)oh! no! the magic is gone!. I emptied the tank and filled it back with soybean from fish and chips and the lipid power was back, wow!; latter the sushi place switched to cottonseed oil and the benz liked it, I have experienced good results with soybean and ZTF as well. I can mix all three in any ratio with the ocassional splash of diesel for the cold spells and so far so good (15kmiles and counting). My limited feedback: Stay away from rice oil! Any other oils to avoid? please advise and happy filtering!
