115 chassis 240d instrument panel removal question

Submitted by oldsmoky115 on 24 May 2007 - 12:39pm.

Hi all- just purchased a 1975 240d (115 chassis) which goes down the road fine. The fuel gauge is pegged on near full and never moves, temp gauge works sporadically, oil pressure gauge stays pegged at 45psi when running even at idle, none of the cluster warning lights works except alternator light, speedo works, odometer doesn't, so I need to remove the instrument cluster to start but I can only pull it about an inch or less out of the dash before there is resistance to further movement- is there a 'trick' or something I need to disconnect elsewhere before I can pull it fully out to disconnect everything? I am considering just getting a combo oil pressure/water temp/ charging voltage meter setup in a gauge pod from whitney or something to mount on the dash and just replacing the sending units as well rather than repairing/fault finding or replacing all of the original gauges. Thanks!!!

Re my posting- I see from looking at the site there is a manual available detailing exactly this process so I think that should give me what I need and will order one

Try to stay with the original instruments

I would recommend you stay with the original instruments. Use used parts to get everything working properly. I have good used complete clusters for 115 240Ds. Contact sales@mercedessource.com if you are interested. Kent

I have one of these!

What is keeping your cluster in place is the oil pressure line. this car's oil pressure gauge is fully mechanical; so it has a line running from the panel to the engine block. You just have to work at it; there is very little slack in the line.
