SVO filter restriction

Submitted by hotrodrx on 2 September 2007 - 12:18pm.
I have had my conversion since last October with few issues. I have the pre-heater sump pump and electric pump in the trunk, with the fuel filter/water separater/heater in the engine compartment. My question is about the last filter that has the cleanable brass filter. I am still getting some black crud out of my tank. It appearsto me that I should have boiled it out prior to wvo conversion, but very little gets trapped in the trunk pre-filter and the one before the water separator. I back flush them in my parts cleaner and they clean up in 30 seconds. The last filter, however, does seem to clog up, giving me some power restriction at full throttle. I clean the pre filters, check and bleed the stanadyne, turn key on and check for flow, it is very good coming in to that last filter, after cleaning. I have pumped the lift pump each time that I cleane it. There just seems to be quite a bit of restriction in that last filter, even after cleaning with brake cleaner, kerosene, and blowing it out. Do you have any suggestions? My final temp on the oil is ~ 160F. Should I take the brass filter and boil it for 30 minutes or so? Thanks Bill p.s. I live in Florida, but have been to Seattle, loved it.

Testing final filter

Hi Bill, I have not had the problem you describe in any of my conversions. As long as the oil is hot have never had a flow restriction through the all metal final filter. That is not to say there is nothing wrong with it. I suggest you try this test.

Replace the all metal filter with the factory type plastic prefilter. I know it will get hot and may warp it but this is only for a test and you should not drive very far with it in place. If your performance drastically improves then you know you have found the restriction (for sure). If no improvement then you need to look elsewhere.

We are now offereing a larger all metal filter that you could install in its place if you want. CLICK HERE to read more. Kent

Kent, I am going to install the larger metal filter, as it has more volume to deal with. The small metal filter with the bronze element doesn't have enough capacity for my situation. Even clean, it seems to restrict the flow 80%. I will place an order this weekend. Thanks, Bill

Kent, I purchased the larger metal filter and highly recommend it. I installed it behind the headlight with a brace on the metal above it. No restriction now. Thanks, Bill
