Still can't get into trunk

Submitted by Snuffy Smith on 1 March 2008 - 7:40am.

Greetings! I posted here recently about not being able to open the trunk or fuel door on my son's 1987 190D. The other day I borrowed a hand vacuum pump and drove over to his college to try to fix it. I found the actuator under the rear seat, disconnected the yellow tube that runs to the back and pulled a vacuum on it--still couldn't get into either. I'm sorry to say I had to take a hacksaw blade to the little stob that locks the fuel door. But I DON'T want to mess up his trunk latch, so do you have any suggestions on how I can get in? We tried to get in by removing the back seat but to no avail. Can you suggest anything? Also, where does the tube go that tees forward from the actuator under the back seat? It seems to be unattached, as I can blow freely through it. Thanks.....Regards......Snuf

Short of cutting a hole in your deck lid there is no other way in other than to get the push button to release the catch. If you can not put your key in and turn it to the side and push in while keeping it turned to the side - then you do have a problem with the lock assembly. You can take it to a lock smith and see if they can help. In the end your last ditch effort is to drill out the tumber assembly - then find a used lock assembly with a key to replace it. Kent

be sure that the button on the lock is all the way out ( aprox 1!2" )before you turn the key ccw and then push. Having the vacume system and the lock fail at the same time seems remote.

Thanks Kent and Archie for your comments. I'm still not ready to drill out the lock....there must be an easier way. Note that the key slot is in the horizontal position. the button is out, and easily pushes in. Is it possible that the key is worn and won't turn the tumbler? Any hope of getting into the trunk via the back seat? Thanks......Snuf

Mine too, 82 300D Turbo, But as the trunk will not open and the key won't work the fuel door is open but will not lock.
As for the tube going forward I know that when the key to the driver side door is locked the trunk and fuel door are supposed to lock ( mine did untill several days ago ) and when the door is unlocked they are both supposed to unlock so that mystery line should go up to the front driverside door lock some how.
I will be working on mine some how this week and if I find a trick I'll post it here.
Best of luck.

I have a 1980 450sl and the door and trunk locks work sometimes, but i had the same trouble getting into my trunk.I kept working key back and forth easy, making sure not to push in on the button, It turned and trunk opened. I might have just been lucky... lol but i spent about 10 mins moving it left and right turns and got into it with no damage done to the lock. mcturner

Trunk Locked

When I first got my 300SD I could not unlock the trunk.
The trunk should unlock when the doors are unlocked if the trunk lock was set to that position with the key.
If the trunk will not unlock and the gas flap would not unlock then you have a vacuum leak. As you said earlier. First I found a Vacuum diagram of my car and then traced the problem down to a bad door locking diaphram. When I plugged the hose to that defective door lock diaphram everything worked and you could open the trunk by simply pushing the trunk lock with my thumb. If you get it open go to MB with your VIN, title and license showing you own the car and they will make the key or tumbler that goes into your trunk lid lock. I did not have the origional key because someone changed the starter switch and lost the trunk key before I bought the car.
