I've recently noticed on my newly acquired '82 300TD, that there is absolutely no EGR and no vacuum lines or any other plumbing that might relate to one that has an EGR. I also have an '81 300TD wagon and it has the EGR. The wagon's exhaust manifold seems to be made to accommodate the EGR, whereas the '82 does not. I can't figure out why the '81 has it, and the '82 doesn't. Is it possible that the one without the EGR is a European model? Headlights are the same on both. If this is a European model, what are the differences between the EGR version, and the one without. Is there a general feeling about the quality or preference for a European model versus a US model? Thanks for the help!

mine too!
i am all ears for the answer. i have a 1981 240D no EGR had a guy argue with me about it until i sent him a pic, then he ignored me.
Contact Mercedes
I recommend you contact Mercedes Benz with your vin and engine numbers. They can let you know if engine is original and what market the car was built for.
My '83 300SD and '85 300D
My '83 300SD and '85 300D both have EGR valves. If your car was built for the US market, it should have the EGR. Are you sure somebody simply did not remove it and bolted a cover plate over the EGR port?
at first glance...
at first glance the key number could be 1981. his 1981 and my 1981 cars do not have egr valves. could this be the cut off date for the US market? maybe diesels built before 1981 were exempt? just a guess really.
