1987 300 turbo D glow plug removal??

Submitted by phasemercedes on 27 March 2008 - 4:42pm.

Hi I just bought a 1987 300 turbo diesel runs great until my glow relay died ( Stiil starts on the 3rd or 4th try though). Took it to my mech in which he advised me that he is weary in changing out the glow plugs as the 1987 has the Alum head and a car with over 200,000 miles, he has had no luck in removing the glow pulgs without stripping the head, because the carbon gets on the glow plug and strips the thread on the head when removing.
Does anybody have a remedy besides removing the head to clean the prechamber from the inside ??? Thank you for any help phasemercedes.

I think he is confusing your engine (OM603) with the OM606 which is known for sticking glow plugs. Why don't you just change them your self? Just replace the bad ones. You can test them at the plug if you have a multi meter. If they are good they will read between .6 and 1 ohm. I think this site sells a book that tells you how to do it. If not just search on the web.
