80 300SD climate control problems

I own a 1980 300 SD and the control panel just stopped working. Discussing the problem with others has not helped. I have checked all of the fuses and they seem to be all OK. It worked one mement and then when you push the buttons nothing happens. My thoughts are it could be a blower fan moter or a repairman told me it could be a Survo (Cost $2000.00 to buy part). Any thoughts? Mike

Mike, as you are learning the climate control system in your 300SD is a very complex and troublesome system. 80 percent of the problems with it stem from a seized servo (unit that turns the hot water on and off and controls all the vacuum functions. The other 20 percent are due to vacuum leaks in the system. When the servo goes it usually burns out the amplifier as well (located behind the glove box). You can get good rebuilt servos for $500. Be very careful or you can spend way more money that you have to. I am currently working on a manual to troubleshoot this system but will not be done for a month or so. If you don't want to spend a lot of money and just want a mechanical way to turn the hot water on and off we offer a kit for less than $100. If you are mechanically inclined it is not hard to install. Take time and effort to learn to fix this system yourself or sell the car... just my humble opinion of course.
