I am in the process of replacing the bushings and ball joints on the lower front control arms of my 82 123. While attempting to remove the smaller bushing (connected to the steering rod?) I ran into a wall. Actually, the bolt, which needs to go up, butted in to the spring cup. How do I remove this bolt? Do I need to remove the springs and cup? If so are there any tricks? HELP!
???? Procedure
Thanks for your continued business. I understand what parts you are trying to replace but I am not quite sure how you are trying to go about it. Not 100 percent sure what you are referring to as steering rod? Do you mean the pressure control (brake support) rod? Are you trying to drop the entire control arm? Do you have the proper Mercedes Spring Compressor? This is a dangerous job without it. I always recommend this type of work be done by a front end shop. This is the main reason why I have not done an instruction manual on front suspension repair. So I don't have any instructions available that would help your situation. If you are going to do it yourself I highly recommend you have the factory manual on hand.
Control arm bushings
I just had all this work done on my '84 M-B 123 - at a front end place. The cost was not that much. You will have to have the front end realigned anyway. Bite the bullet! It's not that bad, and your car will handle like a new Mercedes!
