Shot tranny in '84 300TD wagon

Submitted by ak on 9 August 2008 - 9:42pm.

i was just told my transmission was shot in my '84 300TD. I'm wondering if anyone here has replaced a tranny in their benz? Mine has about 250K miles on it and I'm having a hard time justifying the expenditure. If anyone has any experience with this I'd love to hear about it - or any advice for that matter. Thanks.

Who told you and did you get a second opinion?

What exactly is the transmission doing? How does you fluid look and does it smell burnt? Is there evidence of metal particles in the pan? I wrote a manual on how to remove and replace the transmission.

. Even if you don't do the work yourself this manual will give you an idea of what is involved to R and R one. Consider the possibility of a used transmission from a reputable source.

no second opinion yet.

I brought it to Skagit Transmission. I haven't had a second opinion yet.

The car "revs" or stutters between gears (kind of lurching forward-back-forward- back, if that makes any sense). Mainly 2nd and 3rd, but also 1st and 2nd. The revving abates when you let the throttle off a little. Or conversely, if you step on the throttle, it works through the revving a little more quickly.

Also, I just noticed that the hose leading out of the right side of the multi rubber connector on the valve cover is broken. I don't know what this goes to, but I just read that the transmission is connected to the vacuum system (if I could post a picture somewhere, I could show this)

if your vacuum system isn't

if your vacuum system isn't regulating vacuum properly the thans will have low pressure. you need to ckeck the vacuum at the vacuum modulator at the transmission and see the vacuum drop as you open the throttle. low pressure can cause many problems including slipping and shuddering.

I am having the same problem through all my gears. The more throttle I give it the more it jumps per se. If I gradually accelerate then the problem is not that bad. I on the other hand am looking for a way to check out the vacuum system. I have a MIGHTY VAC but I would like to find a schematic for the whole vacuum system. The other problem I am having with the tranny is when traveling around 65mph it intermittently looses power and then rebuilds slowly. But the car is traveling around 65mph and then drops to 40mph (approx) until it will finally sort of pick up speed. Not the safest way to travel as of now. But I haven't yet checked the vacuum modulator at the tranny. How would I check that?

Cause looks like it was do to leaky trans fluid...

well i just replaced the transmission filter and fluid. The car seems to be shifting normally now (or at least what i know from normal). It seems that I have a pretty good leak going on with the transmission. At this point I'd say that is the problem more than an old filter - though that definitely needed changing. Now I just have to fix this leak!
