79 240D hard starting oil in prechambers

Submitted by transhuver@hotm... on 5 September 2008 - 9:20am.

Have had this 79 240d about a month now. thought i cut a fat hog at $1200 but i'm thinking maybe i got a fat hog.
Starts hard SOMETIMES, and i mean REALLY hard.
Other times it starts right up.
While replacing the injectors with the rebuilt ones i got from Kent yesterday I noticed engine oil on 2 of them. Could i have trouble with the prechambers?
And could that much oil get to the injectors right after it was run?
Where can i get a new engine?
The cars just drives so fine.

No problems its the valve seals. No big deal it will burn out thoose glowplugs faster in the cylinders.I have same problem. Now I had to change glow plug relay after 25 years.2 of my glow plugs go in 6 monthe. One day I'll do the seals.

Do a compression test first

Hard starting and oil in the pre-chambers can be an indication your piston rings / cylinder walls are worn out. The only good way to determine this is to do a compression test on each cylinder. BUT BEFORE you do a compression test you MUST do a valve adjustment to get accurate readings. I have written a manual on the compression test procedure that you can purchase separately or it comes with the compression tester we sell on this site

Once you have determined your compression is good then you can start dealing with other issues like valve stem seals, worn out glow plugs, excessive carbon build up in your glow plug holes, etc.

If you determine the compression is weak I recommend you sell the car and find a good one. It will be cheaper in the long run.
