1978 300D WVO Cold Startup / Ignition Setup

Submitted by panhead490 on 3 October 2008 - 6:02pm.

I just bought my first Mercedes and the previous owner bought and installed the STC 1000. I'm finally filtering WVO and ready to fill it up and was looking over all the documentation/instructions he got from you guys and one thing was a bit
disconcerting ... it says (paraphrasing):

"turn the key to the accessory position before the glow plugs turn on to let the vegetable oil heat up for a certain amount of time depending on temperature and then turning it on to let the glow plugs warm up before starting."

The first position that I can control accessories on my 300D (windows, radio, etc) is the same position the glow plug light comes on ... is this true for others? Did the previous owners serious screw up the wiring? Any recommendations? If I run WVO with this setup what do I risk? Messing up the glow plugs if I still let the oil warm up before I crank the engine? Something worse?

If more information helps, I see 3 positions on the ignition. 0, 1, & 2. The key is inserted and it is a little before the "0" position. Turning to "0" doesn't do anything, "1" is accessories and glow plugs, and "2" is crank.

THANKS SO much -- I love my Mercedes and want to get it running in tip-top shape asap ...

So I found out a bit more

So I found out a bit more info -- before I get to position number "1" in the large amount of space on the ignition between "0" and "1" the radio turns on ... I didn't have the radio in before when I was testing this -- I had thought no accessories turn on before "1".

So a potential easy fix is to wire the system to the radio fuse and then it should power on before the glow plugs, right?

Just trying to avoid as much coking as possible as we get ready for what I hope to be a mild St. Louis winter.

So I looked in the fuse box and moved the white wire that should control the glow plug via the relay from the blower motor to a smaller fuse that powers the radio and now there's the "accessory" position I can control before the glow plugs.

I'm not electrically savvy and just want to make sure that the smaller fuse (I think it went from 15A to 8A) is ok handling it. It's only 12V that switches on the relay so I think I'm ok but I'd like to make sure.

Any thoughts?
