Does the '79 300TD wagon have a filter inside the fuel tank? If it does, I haven't been able to find it. The fitting to which the uptake and return lines connect are welded in place (there is no nut or threaded assembly of any sort), and the copper plug on the bottom of the tank does not have a filter connected to it (i took it out when i drained the tank). There seems to be some sort of intermittent blockage down there, but I can't find the origin and i can't seem to find any sort of filter in the tank. Is there one?
Thanks!
Screen is attached to plug on bottom of tank
Maybe someone cut off the screen on your plug. Here is the link to a new screen and removal tool on our website.

How does it WORK?
I was exploring the fuel routing in a 300TD 1979 today... wondering if I could easily plumb in the tank I'm carrying home (it's destined to be installed in the trunk of my sedan) and I have to admit I don't understand what a screen would be doing in the location indicated.
My 79 300TD has a plug in the bottom center of the tank, but there is no hose attached externally.
The shop manual shows a screen, and points at the bottom center of the tank as it's location. It also shows the fuel inlet and returns as welded on the end of the tank. ?!?
I see you offer the TD specific screen, and a removal tool, but I can't tell how the screen is connected to the fuel line.
If only I hadn't just spent two hours insulating the bottom of the fuel tank...
Screen is not connected to fuel line on wagons
The inside of the tank is chambered. Fuel has to pass through screen into lower chamber where then it travels to the front of the tank where it exits through the metal exit pipe welded to the lower front corner. For visual remove screen and look inside tank with small inspection mirror and flashlight.
