Can Heated SVO Melt a Plastic Prefilter? (1985 300TD)

Submitted by andycox@twcdc.com on 26 May 2009 - 8:38pm.

I've installed a plastic prefilter (no brass inserts) after my Vegtherm and heat exchanger and just before my primary filter. Can the heated SVO melt the plastic prefilter? The prefilter does seem to soften slightly when hot and it's got me worried about a catastrophic meltdown!

Yes

It may not melt it but I have seen it weaken and break one of the nipples off. We offer an all metal substitute that is both cleanable and almost indestructable.

Thanks for your reply.

I actually have the metal filter you mention installed upstream of a fuel booster pump at the outlet to the fuel tank (both purchased from MercedesSource of course!). According to the description, this filter has rating of 60 microns. I thought a plastic prefilter was more like 20 - 30 microns. Am I wrong?

One of the reasons for the clear plastic prefilter is to observe the SVO for dirt and air. What do you think about using a plastic prefilter with brass inserts for this purpose?

The brass inserts will not keep the filter from deforming just aft of the insert. If you are using this filter for inspection purposes then I recommend you place it before the vegtherm.
