82 300TD Door Lock Vacuum Issue

Submitted by bassmun on 1 June 2009 - 10:24am.

I have an '82 300 TDT Wagon that has developed a problem with the central locking system. The other night the central locking system stopped working. So, you won't be surprised that when I put the car in park and turn the key to the off position, the car kept running and eventually stalled out. After the car stopped I tried locking and unlocking the drivers side door and it did NOT make any of the other locks move at all.

Now this morning I tried pushing down on my drivers side door lock while driving and there was enough vacuum to suck all the other locks down no problem. Then like I had expected(or hoped anyway) I put the car in park and and turned the key to off and the car shut down just like it is supposed to.

Obviously there is a vacuum leak somewhere, but where do I start looking? The drivers side door, under the drivers side floor mats? I just want to make sure that I am approaching this in the most efficient manner.

Thanks,
Randy

I did my door locks last year, a bonding experience for the Benz and me. My system was in really bad condition. I found my best friends were a vacuum schematic for the car and a vacuum tester; a hand pump with a gauge that you can use to test the systems. You can isolate the systems where they connect to the brake booster hose to tell if it's interior or under the hood. I found the good thing was that the hard lines that run all over the car are very durable. The bad thing is the little valves and switches they connect to are not.

I recommend you start with your vacuum source. That is covered in my

Vacuum Source Troubleshooting Manual.

Once you know your source is strong and you have adequate vacuum to your door lock system then you can troubleshoot the door lock system and related components. That is covered in my manual
