1985 300D bleeding master brake cylinder ??

Submitted by Ebo Teichmann on 12 June 2009 - 9:36am.

I recently replaced my front brake calipers and flexible hoses (along with new rotors and wheel bearings). I bled an entire can of blake fluid (using a vacuum bleeder) through the calipers and the brake pedal still sinks to the floor after I pump and hold it. I am concluding that I need to replace the master cylinder, which I plan to do. My question: do I need to "bench bleed" the new caliper before I install it or can I install it, fill it with fluid and suck the air out of all the lines? If I bench bleed it, where can I get the plugs to block the exit fittings while I bleed it? The Haynes manual I have describes the bench bleeding procedure.

Our master cylinder comes with instructions for installing and bleeding. You can bench bleed or you can use my process of bleeding the master cylinder with it mounted in the car. Do you have my manual on bleeding brakes? Your master cylinder could still be ok but if you let all the fluid drain out of the reservoir while changing out those parts, you may need to bleed your old master cylinder.
