1984 300D- Rough, knocking and hard tranny shift

Since I bought my car, it has been running rough and has been knocking at lower speeds as well, also the gears shift rough, being kind of new to diesel,(though learning fast, thanks to this awesome website), where should I start looking, maybe a transmission fluid change etc., diesel purge, Thanks
