Trans X for a well transmission ??

Submitted by heb-arts on 27 January 2010 - 12:33pm.

I read with interest your assessment on the use of Trans X. I just ordered a filter kit for my 1982 240D automatic. I have faithfully serviced the transmission over my 19 year ownership of the car. I have dealt with an occasional vacuum leak and modulator adjustment. The car has 230K and aside from a slight premature upshift to 4th gear the car runs and shifts fine.

After reading your article on Trans X my temptation is to run a bottle of it for 500 miles prior to changing the fluid and filter to act as a "high detergent" cleaner. My Yankee heritage is telling me if it's not broke don't fix it.

Mercedes recommends against the use of transmission additives. Of course they are talking white coat shop practices. I personally do not use them in transmissions with less than 150,000 unless these are exhibiting signs of premature wear. On a 28 year old tranny with 230K all bets are off. Seals are getting hard no matter how well maintained. Gum could be accumulating in the valve body passages as well. You make the call.
