1988 300 SE
Got a lot of good information from here which has aided me in keeping my 88’ 300 SE in tip top shape. So Thanks……
I have dilemma in which I was hoping that you guys could help me with. When I am at a stop light, stop sign, when I start to accelerate, I hear a noise coming from the back. Only when making sharp turns from a slow turn or stop and taking off from a stop sign or light. One rolling, no issue. The sound is ike a rocking or knocking noise. It is very prevalent when I am making a sharp left or right turn from a stop. It sounds like a large bottle on a wood table that is about to tip over but it wobbles back and forth until it is in the upright position again. I can’t seem to pinpoint the noise. I replaced the rear sway bar links but that did not seem to work. The only way the noise seems to leave is when I lift the car to inspect it…Once the car is lifted and then lowered, the noise slowly comes back over several days. What could it be? Can you help me?
Sure sounds like a rear axle joint
That is a common description of a loss axle joint. Remember that the axle moves in and out you go over bumps. If you check for play when the car is on a lift you won't feel play because the axle is pulled out past the wear point. You have to test for play with weight on the rear wheels.
