1983 300TD Lift Pump Trouble

Submitted by dannymack on 5 May 2010 - 6:02pm.

8 months ago, I bought an '83 300TD already converted for WVO with MercedesSource lift pump, Raycore filter, and in-line heater. It sat for 7 months with WVO/Biodiesel mix in tank and after driving for a couple weeks I believe I've learned the hard way about the tank corrosion/algae problem I have read about here repeatedly (found the black gunk in filter before lift pump). After draining the tank, refilling with diesel, replacing the filter, I'm not hearing any clicking in my lift pump. I've checked fuses and connections. Is there another way to test pump before declaring I need a new one? Also, I'm considering to go only diesel for a couple years. Can I just reroute fuel lines bypassing pump, filter, and heater and call it good?
Thanks,
Dan

When you leave SWO / Biodiesel in a vehicle for 7 months you may have lots of problems. I will totally gum up the electric pump. It may also permanently damage the engine driven lift pump and the injection pump. Injectors will rust up, fuel tank screen will plug up, etc. Best thing would be to start by running the engine directly with diesel purge to flush the lift pump and injection pump. Then bypass the SVO system by returning to original hose routing.

So given that my boost pump

So given that my boost pump doesn't appear to be working (ie no clicking with ignition on), how do you suggest I purge the system with diesel?

Thanks.

When I mentioned bypassing the SVO system above I meant to bypass everything Bypass the electric fuel pump and use the engine driven pump. Bypass the SVO filter and only use the factory filter. Change the hose routing back to original. If you are not familiar with that then you may need to seek local help. Maybe try to find another 123 diesel and make notes on how the original hose routing is hooked up. I suspect you will need to install a new primer hand pump (located on your injection pump). That is probably gummed up also. Without a good hand pump you will have a very difficult time getting the engine started. Here is a link to our heavy duty primer pumps... CLICK HERE

Thanks, that was really helpful. Is the original house routing something that a manual you sell will describe?
