Timing Chain

If you lose your timing chain you will destroy your engine. The pistons will come up and hit the valves and at speed can push the camshaft(s) right through the valve cover(s). There is no set recommended mileage at which you should change it.

Wear seems to be related to infrequent oil changes (have we heard this before!). I have seen chains wear out at 150,000 and I have seen chains go well over 250,000 miles with very little noticeable stretch.

I prefer to see my customers change the timing chain between 150,000 to 200,000 miles. If your Benz has 200,000 plus miles on it, a chain replacement (along with the tensioner and upper guide rails) is some of the least expensive engine insurance I know of.
