This set of special tools is designed to help speed the removal and ease the overhaul of a Garrett T-3 turbo charger on a 617 turbo diesel engine. These wrenches or ones similar to it, are necessary in order to remove and disassemble a Garrett T-3 without the necessity of removing the entire turbocharger assembly from the exhaust manifold. The set consists of an assortment of both metric and S.A.E combination wrenches. NOTE: If you plan to remove the entire turbo from the engine then these special tools are not required, but you will still need a good selection of metric and S.A.E. regular combination wrenches with thin open-end heads. If you have your own personal selection of specialty wrenches or the ability to make your own, then you may not need this wrench set. This is the primary reason we have chosen to sell this tool kit separately. 

All but a couple tools in the kit have been modified by Kent in our shop. Some have been cut off short to allow for clearance in the engine compartment.  1/2 inch and 13 mm box end wrenches has been cut and bent to a curve to allow access to the bottom bolts that hold the turbo to the turbine housing. The 1/2 inch box has an extension welded on to get to the old rusty turbine housing bolts as shown below. The 13 mm curved box is removable from the other end of the extension and is used to install the new 13 mm head bolts included in our turbo repair kits. We also include cut off short sections of 1/2 and 13 mm open end wrenches that can be used separately in tight places (see image below right) or can be slipped in the other end of the pipe extension for extra leverage, giving you multiple options on how you choose to use the tools. The combination 3/8" - 10 mm wrench that is welding together becomes a universal "T" wrench for properly tightening the critical turbo shaft nut. We call these tools the survival knife of T3 Turbo overhaul... :-)

Along with the wrenches Kent also modifies two of the pick tools. One ground pick tool is used to clean the sealing ring grove and one with modified tip is to aid in the removal of the internal snap rings. If you have your own pick tools or small snap ring plier set then you may not need these. The black plastic pipe coupling is used to support the turbine wheel during reassembly. 

 

NO INSTRUCTIONS: Detailed instructions for the use of these tools are only included with our turbocharger overhaul kits. 

The included red or permanent thread locker is used to secure the critical compressor wheel nut and prevent other bolts from working loose due to engine vibration. If you need a second tube or only want to purchase this thread locker separately CLICK HERE.
