Running badly means poor performance. It happens sooner or later to EVERY diesel owner. The word "performance" is often used to describe how well a diesel engine runs once started. The principles discussed will cover all Mercedes diesels from the mid 1950s to the mid 1990s. Throughout this manual I will use this word to discuss a number of common problems. How performance is rated can mean different things to different people. In the following pages I will relate diesel performance to the following four criteria:

• How much power does it produce?
• What kind of fuel economy does it deliver?
• How smooth does the engine run?
• How much does the engine smoke?

From my many years of working professionally on Mercedes diesels I have learned fuel injectors are the single most neglected maintenance item. I believe there are a number of reasons for this. Partly it may be the mystery surrounding how injectors work and what needs to be done to service and repair them. Then there is the false notion that like the engine they will last forever. Installing steel threaded spark plugs in aluminum heads is risky business. If you are not careful it is easy to damage the fragile aluminum threads. In a few cases I have seen spark plugs blow out of their holes while the engine is running. And does that ever make a loud racket! Heavy handed mechanics often cross thread the plugs during a tune-up and you wont even know it until you go to replace the plugs at some later date.

This is a must read for anyone who is currently running or seriously thinking about running his or her Mercedes diesel on straight vegetable oil (SVO). This is a followup to my introductory guide, Dine Out with Your Diesel. It contains a higher level of technical information on the problems and challenges of long term operations. It has been said that knowledge is power. This is really true when running on SVO / WVO. If you do not have any knowledge of how your system works or what needs to be done to maintain it, then you are going to literally lose your power. The system will only be as reliable as YOU make it.

This troubleshooting guide is directly applicable to the following models: 1975 to 1976 115 chassis 300D. all 1977 to 1985 240D, 300D, 300TD, 300CD and 1978 to 1985 116 and 126 chassis 300SD (pictures and illustrations were taken from work on these cars. Burned out glow plugs are becoming an increasing problem in the 60x. engines produced from the mid 1980's to the mid 1990's. This 60x. group in question includes the four cylinder (601) engine that came in the 1984-1986 190D 2.2, the five cylinder (602) engine that came in the 190D 2.5 and 300D 2.5 from 1986 to 1993, and the 6 cylinder (603) engine installed in the 124, 126, and 140 chassis 300D / TD (1987 only), 300SDL and 350SDL.

Older Mercedes have a very effective emergency brake design which was virtually the same on all models from the late 1960's right up through the early 1990's. The actuating mechanisms are all mechanical and are controlled by a Y cable under the car. This cable is pulled by either a hand or foot operated lever.

When troubleshooting a no-start problem it is always best to check the simple things first before moving on to the more difficult repairs. When converting your Mercedes Diesel to WVO fuel, there are many things to think about and many choices to make. In a perfect world your diesel would not leak a drop of fluid. Unfortunately, with the age of your vehicle, it may not be economically possible to eliminate every leak. Some you may just have to live with. Let's face it. These older diesels are 20+ years old and that age takes it toll on gaskets, rubber seals, o-rings and rubber lines.
