The principles discussed will cover all Mercedes diesels from the mid 1950s to the mid 1990s. Throughout this manual I will use this word to discuss a number of common problems. How performance is rated can mean different things to different people. In the following pages I will relate diesel performance to the following four criteria:

Installing steel threaded spark plugs in aluminum heads is risky business. If you are not careful it is easy to damage the fragile aluminum threads. In a few cases I have seen spark plugs blow out of their holes while the engine is running. And does that ever make a loud racket! Heavy handed mechanics often cross thread the plugs during a tune-up and you wont even know it until you go to replace the plugs at some later date.

Being locked out of your 123 trunk can be very frustrating, especially if you left the ignition keys inside when you closed the trunk lid! If you are locked out and still have your keys sometimes you may not be able to open the trunk due to a failed locking mechanism. And there is no way to get through the back seat to open it from inside either. This is a must read for anyone who is currently running or seriously thinking about running his or her Mercedes diesel on straight vegetable oil (SVO). This is a followup to my introductory guide, Dine Out with Your Diesel. It contains a higher level of technical information on the problems and challenges of long term operations. It has been said that knowledge is power. This is really true when running on SVO / WVO. If you do not have any knowledge of how your system works or what needs to be done to maintain it, then you are going to literally lose your power. The system will only be as reliable as YOU make it.

Are you plagued with a diesel that wont turn off when you want it to? Has it been slowly taking more time to quit when you turn your key off? It is time to fix it before you have more problems! This troubleshooting guide is directly applicable to the following models: 1975 to 1976 115 chassis 300D. all 1977 to 1985 240D, 300D, 300TD, 300CD and 1978 to 1985 116 and 126 chassis 300SD (pictures and illustrations were taken from work on these cars. The instructions will also apply in principle to the later model 201 chassis 190D, 124 300D and TD, and 126 300SDL and 350SD to 1993.

This guide is written specifically for owners of 123 and 126 diesels up to 1985. There are some sections that apply to the 115 and 116 chassis but it is not specific to those models. This manual covers understanding how the vacuum system works, common symptoms of trouble, possible causes, and testing and repairing the problems. Deals mostly with issues from the firewall forward like testing the vacuum pump, repairing shutoff problems, finding leaks, etc.

For all 123 chassis cars with vacuum door locks from 1977 to 1985. Now you can finally fix those pesky vacuum door locks yourself! Failure is almost always caused by vacuum leaks in the system. This 28 page manual with 55 photographs will take you step by step through the process of quickly finding and repairing those leaks. Starting at the firewall and working all the way to the trunk/deck of your car, I will show you how to isolate the problems even without having to take the door panels off.

To aid in trouble shooting you will need to acquire an inexpensive vacuum hand pump. Normal hand tools are the only other things you will need. For 1977 to 1980 cars I even have vacuum actuator repair kits available so you can replace any cracked diaphragms you may find.

Older Mercedes have a very effective emergency brake design which was virtually the same on all models from the late 1960's right up through the early 1990's. The actuating mechanisms are all mechanical and are controlled by a Y cable under the car. This cable is pulled by either a hand or foot operated lever.

When troubleshooting a no-start problem it is always best to check the simple things first before moving on to the more difficult repairs. When converting your Mercedes Diesel to WVO fuel, there are many things to think about and many choices to make. One of the most important, is deciding on what type of "fuel tank system" you should install. This can have a huge impact on your other components and how you install them. That is why I strongly encourage making all fuel tank related decisions before finalizing the final layout of any WVO conversion.

In a perfect world your diesel would not leak a drop of fluid. Unfortunately, with the age of your vehicle, it may not be economically possible to eliminate every leak. Some you may just have to live with. Let's face it. These older diesels are 20+ years old and that age takes it toll on gaskets, rubber seals, o-rings and rubber lines.

Since owners of these cars seem to want to keep driving them, then sooner or later they must deal with some fluid leaks. It has been said the most important thing about maintaining your Mercedes is fluids, fluids, and fluids. Let's make sure those fluids stay where they should. For all 123 chassis cars made from 1977 to 1985 and all 116 chassis sedans built from 1973 to 1980. This repair guide will take you through the process of how to properly remove your heater blower motor and replace the motors two brushes. This is the most common reason for failure. If your blower motor has been intermittent or some days it wont come on until you drive for a while your motor brushes are most likely at the end of their life. This is something you may just want to replace as a preventative measure. 20 year old heater motor brushes are very prone failing at any time. If it has not failed yet it most likely will sometime soon.
