300D 617.912 engine will not start

Submitted by GraemeW on 18 April 2008 - 10:39pm.

I have a two tank SVO system on my Merc with 310,000 Kms on the clock - 100,000 Kms are mine most on SVO. I have never been stumped, held up or broken down before. The engine starts and shuts down on diesel.
The problem- I was away for a week and my Merc sat idle. When I came back the Merc started hesitantly (low battery). I drove about 20 Kms and the next day she would not start for love nor money; totally dead. Not even a kick from one cyllinder.

I checked;
Lift pump ok, replaced with electric lift pump & still no go.
IP moving fuel when lines cracked.
Cam timing marks and harmonic balancer marks line up ok.
Valve clearance not binding,
Glow plugs working, has the Mercedessource fast plugs installed. Best thing ever.
The injectors were re-newed 8 months ago,

Control Arm Bushing difficulties

Submitted by guttermonk on 7 April 2008 - 8:42pm.

I am in the process of replacing the bushings and ball joints on the lower front control arms of my 82 123. While attempting to remove the smaller bushing (connected to the steering rod?) I ran into a wall. Actually, the bolt, which needs to go up, butted in to the spring cup. How do I remove this bolt? Do I need to remove the springs and cup? If so are there any tricks? HELP!

Kent Bergsma Hard at Work on New Series of Advanced DIY Manuals

Kent at computer

Kent is hard at work on his new series of advanced D.I.Y. mechanic series of manuals. The challenge for him has been trying to make the advanced technical side of the information still understandable to the average home mechanic. For example, explaining how to use electrical testing meters to test the function and health of a diesel pre-glow system is not an easy task. Describing how to fine tune the vacuum adjustments on a diesel automatic transmisson is even more difficult.

The new manuals will be printed and wire bound in a larger format (8.5 x 7 inches). This will allow room for more charts, schematics and larger pictures. Knowing that these manuals will be handled often, we are adding a plastic cover to help minimize grease spots.

1986 300e rear suspension stomping noise

Submitted by joel27 on 25 January 2008 - 12:28pm.

1986 300e 5 spd.(Manual) car starts to sway and jumps on high speed. I thought that the rear shock was going bad so I bought the bilstien HD shocks for the rear and have it installed in a local repair shop close to my home. Its much stable on the freeway. But when I drive the car I hear stomping noise on left rear when driving on bumps or pot holes. It feels like the shocks are so stiff it sounds like dug dug dug dug it feels the rear is falling apart could it be the installation not installed correctly. The noise was not there before. what part is worned out to make this noise. Im going crazy Please help me if you have any idea. thank you

103 90' 300E hard to start, idled rough and would quit at stop signs. Frankly, What a piece!

Submitted by rioleo on 22 January 2008 - 11:52am.

I am posting my condensed experience on this subject to spare other 103 owners from going nuts/broke or both.

I bought this PIECE at a good price with the intention of reselling it. It had a "fresh smog certificate" and drove it 300+ miles, I loved and enjoyed the smoothness and I immediatly thought what a great grandmas car(I am a die hard mercedes diesel rattling cage fool: 74 240D 4sp).

Anyways the honeymoon stopped abruptly when the car started to show the above symptoms and all other signs of being possessed, I thoght the problem was not "BASIC" tune up related because it flew thru smog.

window regulator

Submitted by oldsinner111 on 1 December 2007 - 1:40pm.

by using Kents 126 door repair book,I changed out my window regulator and motor in 30 minutes.its best to know how, they ain't made like Chevy's.
One more thing,Mercedes Source has got Diesel Giant, and Performance Parts 4 Benz beat, with shipping times.
So if you need it fast and Kent's got it,you know what to do.

Fuel Filter Replacemnent and other Difficulties- Be Prepared!

Submitted by DLind on 19 September 2007 - 11:00pm.

When my '82 300DT lost power on the freeway I managed to nurse it to my destination and got out my fuel spare filters. I installed a new prefilter and main filter, bypassed the FM10 water separator, pumped on the hand pump, and then found that the lack of a 17mm end wrench made bleeding the lines at the injectors real difficult as all I had was an adjustable wrench. Too bulky for that job. Then I screwed up by not reading Kent's instructions carefully and ran my battery down before the fuel lines were bled enough to get the engine going. A friend jumped my battery but it still took a lot of cranking to get her running again. Then I tried to turn the engine off and it kept on running!

SVO filter restriction

Submitted by hotrodrx on 2 September 2007 - 12:18pm.

I have had my conversion since last October with few issues. I have the pre-heater sump pump and electric pump in the trunk, with the fuel filter/water separater/heater in the engine compartment. My question is about the last filter that has the cleanable brass filter. I am still getting some black crud out of my tank. It appearsto me that I should have boiled it out prior to wvo conversion, but very little gets trapped in the trunk pre-filter and the one before the water separator. I back flush them in my parts cleaner and they clean up in 30 seconds. The last filter, however, does seem to clog up, giving me some power restriction at full throttle.

Q & A: Which SVO (Straight Vegetable Oil) Conversion Kit Should I Buy?

INTRODUCTION:

The number one question we receive concerning our SVO conversions is, I have a diesel Mercedes and live in Anycity, USA. I want to get it right? There are so many choices on the market that it is confusing to know which one I should buy. Everyone claims their system is the best. What kit do you recommend?

1985 300D Drive shaft repair

Submitted by Matt Urich on 6 June 2007 - 7:27pm.

Working on my first Mercedes here and I'm going throught the drive train and replacing everything that I can so I don't wind up on the side of the road somewhere with my thumb out. My flex plates seem to be in fine shape, but I'm not sure about the center bearing. Thinking I'd like to replace it, but not sure how to go about getting it off and getting a new one on Also, anybody have any thoughts on how long the universal joints on these cars last ? Mine seems OK but I've got 222K miles on this one. 1985 300D. Matt

Kent Bergsmas 1979 300SD with DTC Ultimate 4000 Conversion Installed.

Kents 1979 300SD

You are looking at Kents pristine 1979 300SD turbo diesel that he recently acquired from the original owner. This sedan is so cherry the original spare tire has not been out of the trunk. Kent prefers the 116 chassis over the 123 or 126. He feels the ride and handling are smoother and quieter and the their transmissions better shifting and much more predictable.

To make this the ultimate road cruiser, Kent designed and installed his all weather all terrain DTC Ultimate 4000 Vegetable oil fuel conversion. The components he manufactured and chose for this kit came out of his own experience of working on and driving a number of different vegetable oil fuel systems. All the old nagging problems were addressed and we are happy to share with you some pictures of the results.

1984 300d Ignition switch Woes and advice

Submitted by floridaham42 on 6 January 2007 - 8:16pm.

I just had a problem with my ignition switch and want to give some helpful advice to others so you won't have similar grief. My 300d has 223,000 miles on it and several times (not very often) the key would not turn in ignition, but I was always able to make it work by jiggling the steering wheel..until last time!No amount of jiggling ,light tapping, heavy tapping,or even the locksmith, could get it to move.
