I have seen the stickers on peoples' cars and read extensively why I should buy the products. I am wondering if anyone else has feedback or firsthand experience using synthetic oils (ie. Amsoil) along with the high-bypass filter on gas or diesel engines? Please ask if you need more information to answer the question. I am thinking proactively towards - theoretically - extending the engine life even further. I would use the secondary high-bypass filtering and oil condition monitoring to watch for metals/chemical imbalances present as the engine hours and miles continue to accrue. Seemingly $1,000 (approximate cost for filter kit and oil) now could save the outlay of several thousand dollars for a rebuild. At least delay it for a longer period of time. Thanks all.
Oil bypass filter
My '82 300DT came to me with a fairly low mileage engine which I want to keep running forever so I decided to install a Frantz bypass oil filter. The one that uses tight rolls of toilet paper. (www.wefilterit.com) Is this anything like the one you mention? I also have wondered about synthetics but am currently using Delo 400.
I wouldn't
I am not a fan of putting Synthetic into older engines, design tol. for bearings were not optimized for synth. and higher mileage does not improve this. My experience is that oil consumption goes up and I am uncomfortable with extending the interval longer than conventional recommendations. (I hear too many anecdotes of increased wear.)
If you are not extending the interval, I see little advantage to the extra filtration. I don't believe there is enough benefit to be truely cost effective.
Things I believe give you more bang for the buck are:
Use only Rotella or Delo if it is a diesel.
Change at an interval appropriate to your driving. ie Much more frequently if you do a lot of short trips.
Be hard-core about regular maintenance. Timing chain, valve adj., hoses etc.
In the diesels, many have gone 500K with nothing more exotic. Much the same holds true with the gas engines, but with a shorter service life.
I have considered a pre-luber, especially on engines that get infrequent use. I have not tried it yet, but, very well might. I will post if I do if anyone is interested.
Just my two cents. Kent?
Synthetic oil
I have a 83 300sd it now has 267,000 mi. I use Amsoil 20w 40 for diesel good for about 25,000 before change.
Amsoil helps keep seals pliable.Been using it for about 2 years. I do not have any oil leaks and fuel mileage increased. Also use Amsoil A/T fluid
Synthetic Oil
I have a gas 1985 Volvo 244 b230f (2.3L) engine. First owner used good regular Penzoil for 170,000 miles, mostly 4 mile trips and longer no heavy stop and go, I bought and switched to Mobil 1 for then through 370,000 miles or so. Mostly 32 mile trips no heavy stop and go. Started doing 5,000 mile oil changes, easy to remember pushing filter harder than oil. Have not been into engine farther than water pump yet. Compression ok last week when changing plugs. Changed transmission, clutch, main seals once each. Read it is best to stick with one oil or at least don't change all the time. I have had good luck.
