I've gone to Steven at Auto Europa in Albany right off the 80/580 for major work I couldn't handle in the driveway. He personally has something like 37 years of experience (!!!) working exclusively on Mercedes of all types. He's perhaps not the cheapest shop, but he REALLY knows his stuff, which is what you want when someone else is working on your "baby", ha ha. He's a real Mercedes enthusiast who has a genuine interest in keeping these aging beauties on the road. And he's very upfront and accurate with his estimates. I've taken both a 1983 W123 300D and a 1992 W124 300D to him mainly for front end/suspension work and have been very happy with the reults both times. Auto Europa's number is 510-528-3196.
HI Kent. Finally got around to adjusting my valves on my '82 300d. Your wrenches really made it easy, and after the first few it was only taking me 5 minutes a valve. Regarding the clacking noise in my rear-end, turned out to be the cv shaft which I found a rebuilt one for $180CDN. It's a lot more pleasurable to drive again and a lot cheaper repair than I figured.
