This is now becoming one of the most common oil leaks in the older diesel engines. Lets face it. These engines are getting older and older and the rubber is becoming more brittle with time. If you plan to continue owning a 116, 126 or 123 5 cylinder turbo diesel you will most likely have to deal with replacing the front engine crank seal at some time. You can tell if it is leaking if the front of your engine is always wet with oil.

Booklet with complete illustrated instructions is available separately. CLICK HERE TO ORDER
It will require removal of the fan shroud, radiator, fan, and pulleys. There are three special tools required to complete this job. The special seal press tool is already provided for you in the kit. You will also need a three arm hub puller as pictured in the booklet and possibly a 300 ft pound torque wrench. You should be able to rent both these tools from most tool rental outfitters.
As far as hand tools you should have on hand or purchase a quality 6 mm allen head socket. Do not buy a cheap one as it may cause you to round out those allen head bolts (not fun). For the front crankshaft balancer bolt you will need a 1 and 1/16 SAE or a 27 mm socket. Aside from those you should have an assortment of hand tools, drain pans, spray can brake or carb cleaner, a good high tack gasket cement and some heavy axle or bearing grease.
I recommend if you are opening up the front accessory area of your engine for any other work, you go ahead and change this front seal at the same time. This is also a good opportunity to replace the water pump, rebuild the vacuum pump, replace your v-belts, and flush the cooling system.
Here are other tools we carry that may help you complete this job successfully:
If you have a leaking transmission seal it can be a real bear to get the old seals out without this special pry tool. This tool also works great for front crank seals as well.
