88 260e - rough idle on cold start

Submitted by 260e4me on 19 March 2010 - 5:24pm.

103 engine. Rough idle at cold start up. Smooths out after 30-45 seconds.
When starting warm, starts right away and stalls immediately – re starts right away OK and stays running. Recently hesitates when cold. Been unusually cold her in FL lately. Any thoughts??

How many miles on the engine? This makes a difference when approaching this type of troubleshooting. Do you have any records of what has been recently replaced on the engine?

Thanks for the reply. Speedo read 167xxx when I had the odometer fixed. about 15xxx more since. Actual miles ??? 200xxx plus? I replaced the fuel and air filters when I first got the car. About every 4000 I do plugs. #1 and #2 foul (valve seals is my guess). Aside from the starting issue the car runs great. 20+ mpg.

Fuel injectors are often neglected

After 150,000 miles these engines can suffer from leaking and poorly spraying fuel injectors and then are not generally considered when throwing parts at the problem. Plugs and wires should be changed every 60,000 miles for peak performance. If that has been done then consider injectors. Be sure to replace all the injector rubber seals. They are a problem too on high mileage engines.

The best way to test is by comparison. With our tester you pump test a known good injector and then compare it with the spray pattern or patterns of the other injectors you want to test. Use the new CIS injector included with this tester to use for a bench mark reference. Look at the superb atomization of the fuel coming out of a new injector!

One new C.I.S. fuel injector included for a limited time.
