W124 Steering Box Interchangability

Submitted by BioDrew on 30 June 2010 - 10:05am.

Are all steering boxes for the W124 chassis interchangable? What are the limitations to swapping if there are any?

To be specific, I have a 1992 300D 2.5 Turbo with a far-too-far-gone steering box and not much money to fix it. So I'm trying to figure out how wide I can cast my net at the ol' pick-a-part, so to speak.

If this is a trickier question than I am assuming, perhaps someone could let me know where such information could be had... But I have to figure this out ASAP 'cause the degree of "wander" has become pretty sketchy at freeway speeds - especially when crossing the SF-OAK Bay Bridge with a strong crosswind! :-o

Thanks, all!

Not all equal

There are a number of differences in 124 boxes. Not 100 percent sure but appears the 300D 2.5 is unique to that model. Our suppliers don't even offer a rebuilt. To be safe find a good used one from a 90 to 93 300D.

Augh! I was afraid of that...

...but I'm sure glad I asked before just "going for it", ha ha.

Unfortunately I don't know when I'll ever realistically see a 1990-93 W124 300D 2.5 turbo in a parts yard, so I'm back to square one (i.e.: not being able to afford the repair) but I guess that's better than making the matter even worse with the wrong part! I just wish it didn't currently take quite so much effort and attention to keep a straight line with all the slop in the existing box... Argh.

Anyhow, thanks very much for the info, Kent! Let me know if any boxes happen to turn up there... or if it turns out there's a "secret" box interchange possibility not listed in the guides. Cheers!
