From the improvements (sometimes dramatic) I have seen first hand and heard second hand (from our customers, I can confidently say this is one of the top performance upgrades for an older Mercedes diesel. Increasing fuel pressure can increase both power and MPG. One of the common reasons for a diesel to produce excess smoke and deliver poor fuel economy is low fuel pressure/flow to the injection pump. This can of course be caused by dirty fuel filters but it can also be caused by a worn mechanical lift pump as well as worn components inside the injection pump itself. When fuel pressure is low it can actually delay the release timing of your fuel injectors - thus causing incomplete fuel burn - leading to excess smoke and poor mileage.

In all my life of working on hundreds of different cars I have never seen an engine eat spark plugs like the 103 engine. If your engine burns oil (usually due to hardened valve stem seals) then the problem can be even worse. If you engine just quits while your driving and won't restart (and you are sure you are not out of fuel) just change the plugs before wasting time and further expense chasing the problem.
