WVO/Diesel Blend Requirements
Submitted by Alan4494 on 15 February 2007 - 5:23am.
I'm looking for input from people with experience with wvo/diesel blends. I live in Pa and want to start my 83 300d on this diet this spring/summer. Also I have acess to fresh pure soybean oil and may use that instad of wvo. I want to use my existing tank with new fuel lines and maybe a heated filter. Any input would be great. Thanks
Requirements to run WVO blends in Mercedes Diesels
There is a lot of information and a lot of opinions floating around the internet concerning what alternative fuel you can or can not run in your Mercedes diesel. I am continually surprised that a lot of people believe what they read - especially on the forums. There are secret formulas, there are home brew and guaranteed mixes, and endless claims of great success. Most older diesel engines will run on just about anything, so just because it runs good does not necessarily mean it is good or healthy for your engine. I have a friend who is running his diesel on used transformer oil! Many claims and opinions come from people who have never taken a diesel engine apart. At Mercedessource source we have taken hundreds of diesel engines apart, rebuilt a number from the block up, and worked on many who have been running some type of vegetable based fuel. We actually get to see what is going on inside the injection pump and combustion chambers!
But with all my experience even I have to admit that what I offer you is STILL my opinion. SVO and WVO fuel operations are still highly experimental and should be considered as such. I guess there is one thing I can offer that I feel very certain about: Do not believe everything you read.
If you plan to run SVO or an SVO mix there are two things I feel very strongly about and highly recommend. These have come from my own performance testing as well as on-going customer maintenance and diesel engine teardowns. These two requirements are better filtration and lower viscosity.
1. You need a better filter/water separator than what is installed at the factory. Even if running a mix your factory filter will give you fits. It will plug up quickly and leave you stranded on the road. You need to install a high performance diesel filter that is easy to change out on the road and you MUST carry spare filter elements in your trunk!
2. You need to find a way to reduce the viscosity (thickness) of the SVO. This can be done by thinning the oil with another fuel such as diesel, by adding heat to the oil, or by a combination of both. I prefer electric heat for final boost (over coolant based heat) because of how fast a good electric heater will boost the oil temp (under one minute). It stands to reason if you have more heat you won't need to add as much fossil fuel to the mix and this can save you a lot of money over the long haul.
I have had many requests for an inexpensive alternative to high priced kits when someone just wants to an SVO blend in their diesel. From those requests have come my newest kit. I have chosen to call it the BMFM (Bio Mass Fuel Manager). It is a builders kit and designed to help with a number of different requirements related to running vegetable oil based fuels. It can help when running 100 percent biodiesel in cold weather, it can provide those two key requirements when running a SVO blend, and it can become the key component in building your own full featured SVO fuel system. And you will be super surprised and pleased at the low price! CLICK HERE to read more.
