WVO/Diesel Blend Requirements

Submitted by Alan4494 on 15 February 2007 - 6:23am.

I'm looking for input from people with experience with wvo/diesel blends. I live in Pa and want to start my 83 300d on this diet this spring/summer. Also I have acess to fresh pure soybean oil and may use that instad of wvo. I want to use my existing tank with new fuel lines and maybe a heated filter. Any input would be great. Thanks

Requirements to run WVO blends in Mercedes Diesels

There is a lot of information and a lot of opinions floating around the internet concerning what alternative fuel you can or can not run in your Mercedes diesel. I am continually surprised that a lot of people believe what they read - especially on the forums. There are secret formulas, there are home brew and guaranteed mixes, and endless claims of great success. Most older diesel engines will run on just about anything, so just because it runs good does not necessarily mean it is good or healthy for your engine. I have a friend who is running his diesel on used transformer oil! Many claims and opinions come from people who have never taken a diesel engine apart. At Mercedessource source we have taken hundreds of diesel engines apart, rebuilt a number from the block up, and worked on many who have been running some type of vegetable based fuel. We actually get to see what is going on inside the injection pump and combustion chambers!

But with all my experience even I have to admit that what I offer you is STILL my opinion. SVO and WVO fuel operations are still highly experimental and should be considered as such. I guess there is one thing I can offer that I feel very certain about: Do not believe everything you read.

If you plan to run SVO or an SVO mix there are two things I feel very strongly about and highly recommend. These have come from my own performance testing as well as on-going customer maintenance and diesel engine teardowns. These two requirements are better filtration and lower viscosity.

1. You need a better filter/water separator than what is installed at the factory. Even if running a mix your factory filter will give you fits. It will plug up quickly and leave you stranded on the road. You need to install a high performance diesel filter that is easy to change out on the road and you MUST carry spare filter elements in your trunk!

2. You need to find a way to reduce the viscosity (thickness) of the SVO. This can be done by thinning the oil with another fuel such as diesel, by adding heat to the oil, or by a combination of both. I prefer electric heat for final boost (over coolant based heat) because of how fast a good electric heater will boost the oil temp (under one minute). It stands to reason if you have more heat you won't need to add as much fossil fuel to the mix and this can save you a lot of money over the long haul.

I have had many requests for an inexpensive alternative to high priced kits when someone just wants to an SVO blend in their diesel. From those requests have come my newest kit. I have chosen to call it the BMFM (Bio Mass Fuel Manager). It is a builders kit and designed to help with a number of different requirements related to running vegetable oil based fuels. It can help when running 100 percent biodiesel in cold weather, it can provide those two key requirements when running a SVO blend, and it can become the key component in building your own full featured SVO fuel system. And you will be super surprised and pleased at the low price! CLICK HERE to read more.

Advise Caution ref. WVO

I make my own biodiesel from WVO. I have a very good source. The restaurant changes their oil frequently. It is about as good as used oil gets. But I am still amazed at how much dirt and glycerine and other contaminants come out of my biodiesel processor.

After seeing this, there is no way I would ever consider running my 300SD on straight WVO. WVO is a very dirty, contaminated waste product. Some of that can be filtered, but no amount of filtering can remove the glycerine (glycerol), long chain free fatty acids and other dissolved contaminants. Hey, we are talking thick, black, molasses like goo that makes up 10%-20% of the raw oil. Glycerine is not oil. It is water soluble. Once separated in the processor, biodiesel will not dissolve it.

And then there is the murky looking waste water that is about the color and consistency of a blended late. Hey, if you know anyone making biodiesel, check out the processing and washing waste for yourself and see if you want to burn that in your that in your diesel engine.

I understand glycerine can safely be burnt in industrial, high temperature incinerators. But if burnt improperly, it creates highly toxic acrolein fumes. I have no idea if diesel composition is sufficient to prevent these fumes.

More power to folks who are experimenting with burning straight WVO. Hey, if it works for you, that is all that counts. And anything we can do to reduce our dependence on petroleum fuels and reduce greenhouse gasses is laudable. But I agree with Kent that straight WVO should be considered to be experimental, and one must be willing to accept the consequences and responsibility of potential damage to your diesel engine and more.

There are those who have the same concern about biodiesel. But the process of converting WVO to biodiesel greatly purifies the product and modifies the long chain fatty acids. It is a much more tested and studied product. Therefore I have far more confidence in using a clean, purified product like biodiesel, than the using straight WVO.

It might "run fine" on WVO, but the questions is, for how long, and at what cost to the motor, etc. I remain concerned that WVO might save a few bucks in the short term, but cost far more in the long term. Therefore I advice caution and due diligence ref. fueling a diesel engine with WVO.

wvo/diesel blends for single tank conversion

Do any of you have experience with different mixtures of WVO/ biodiesel/ diesel/ kerosene ?

For summer is it best to run WVO straight or is it easier on the injectors if you mix the WVO with 10% diesel or biodiesel.

When it gets colder is it ok to switch over to a mixture of WVO and 20% Kerosene?

Your input is appreciated
