tachometer for a 240D

I recently replaced the dash instrument assembly in my 1985 300DT and now I have a few spare parts, like the old still functioning tach. What is involved in installing a tach on my 1982 240D. Is it an electrical or a mechanical pickup?

Too much work

In my humble opinion it would be way too much work. Anything is possbile, but since it is all electrical you would have to mount a sensor pickup on the front of the engine, wire in the tack amplifier and wire properly through the dash to the instrument. I just use my ear!
