Power Steering Failure

Submitted by mark91 on 20 April 2008 - 5:04pm.

I have a 1982 240d. The power steering does not work until the car gets warmed up. Is the problem the pump or??? Any help would be great.
Thanks.

change the filter first

i would start with a fluid and filter change. Kent sells the filter. i have a 1981 240d when i did my filter, it was the original one that came with the car. these get neglected. my filter came out in 3 pieces. it was not even doing its job it was so old. get a turkey baster or buy one of kents vaccum suction tools and suck your fluid out. change the filter. drive it a while and suck and replenish the fluid again. this will get more of the old fluid out. if the pump is not bad, you will feel the differnce.

as replacemtn fluid i used ATF thats what i read was used maybe Kent has a better notion of what to replace fluid with.

If filter doesn't fix it replace the Pump

80 percent of the time it is the pump. 20 percent the steering box. We have good used pumps in stock.
