82 300D Idling too fast

Submitted by Brook on 16 July 2008 - 12:59am.
Hi Kent, Brook here...(of the Larry Mans clan)... 1982 Turbo W123 My car (Sherman) is idling way too fast these days. I took it into my MB shop at closing time the other day, so they didn't have much time to diagnose but we did notice that the "arms" that one pulls on from the engine to "rev" the engine (say, during a diesel purge) are sticking somewhat and not allowing the engine to relax into a normal idle. My mechanic sprayed some lubricant on the arm "joints" hoping that would release them a bit and yet after a few days, it's still happening. A) Have you seen this before B) What's next? Many Thanks, Brook San Diego

Lube and lube some more

Hi Brook, this condition is almost always caused by the linkage jamming due to lack of lubrication. ALL ball joint and all shaft bearings need to be oil regularly (See my Diesel Performance Tuning Manual). In some cases it gets so bad that you have to remove the linkage arms off the shafts, clean the gunk, oil and reassemble. Use a Q-tip and automatic transmission fluid. Also check to be sure your throttle pedal inside the car is not binding. Kent

Hi Kent

You mention automatic transmission fluid. Should I be using this for the lubricant, or just for cleaning out the gunk on the linkage arms? In other words, what type of lubricant is best for keeping these arms lubed up?

Thanks,

Brook
