More amps please for 1984 300SD

Submitted by sparker on 16 January 2009 - 7:32am.

I need more amperage for all the various electric stuff, including fuel heaters, in my car. I have read that the 89 Saab 900S (bosch AL129X) 115A alternator is a direct replacement for my standard MB unit. Does this work? Is there another alternator that will work? Thanks - Steven

The real solution is a killer battery. Kent recommends the Optima batteries...see;
"Optima Battery For Top Diesel Performance"

I installed one and a new stock 55 amp alternator in my '81 300TDT running straight WVO. It starts on the first tick of the starter... runs aux. pump, line and injector heaters with never a problem. It's one of the best investments I have made on my "fat wagon".

I did the swap on my 1980 300 sd and it was pretty straight forward. I got a lot of info off some forums on rewiring. It looks impossible to get it off the saab but it's actually not too bad. A ratcheting box end wrench makes it doable. The getting it in the car was tricky only because the saab alternator body is a little bigger so the belt had to be put on the pulley before the alternator was fitted in the mount. Once in place there was room for adjustment.
If you need more details I have them printed off from I can't remember which forums.

For myself this upgrade made a noticable difference in headlights, interior lights and keeping the battery fully charged. Even with a brand new battery (1000 CA) it would slowly lose it's power over a few months.
