I ran a little low on coolant the other day (not sure why...), and the engine got hot (almost 200 degrees according to the gauge on the dash). after i filled the radiator, i noticed that oil had started leaking from somewhere on the engine. a can of brake cleaner revealed that the oil is leaking from under the oil filter element housing cap. so i changed the oil and filter and filter housing cap o-ring ('cause it was time for an oil change anyway), and tightened it down really tight, and it is still leaking. A LOT. like it leaves a puddle a foot across when i run into the supermarket for a little while. what the heck!? did the filter housing somehow get distorted from the heat? i'm stumped, and i have to drive 700miles in a couple of days.
UPDATE. i uncovered
UPDATE. i uncovered something sinister. it appears that at some time in its history this vehicle had one of the flanges on the filter housing drilled and tapped. i discovered that the tap had come loose, and thus the nut was not actually tightening the cover down adequately. got a bolt from the hardware store and now everything appears to be back in working order. now if i could only get the oil stains offa my driveway!
Oil Cleanup
Generous amount of Simple Green or straight Orange Oil on the stain. Maybe even brush it in. Leave that to soak in for a few hours (cooler part of the day the better).
Then borrow or rent an +2500psi pressure washer (don't use a cheapo!). That should get the majority of the stain out.
I just did this on Sunday... Made a bit of a mess after changing my oil cooler lines.
