1985 300d diagnosing transmission leaks ??

Submitted by kyote508 on 13 July 2009 - 3:11pm.

I have developed a transmission leak, originally i thought it was the pan gasket so i replaced the filter and put on a new gasket. that didnt work it is still leaking. i think it is comming from where the dipstick tube goes into the transmission, or maybe the transmission cooler line, i have tightened the cooler line and it still seems to be leaking. if anyone has any sugestions i would be most greatfull.

Clarification

Does it only leak when you have run the engine, or does it leak when the car has not run and has been parked for a while?

I bleieve it only leaks

I bleieve it only leaks after engine has been running, i have sprayed it down with water while it is in the garage and have not seen anything leaking. then drive it and after awhile there it is leaking again.
thanks

Possible pressure seal leak

If the leak originates from the pan gasket, dip stick housing or oil cooler line fittings it will usually continue to leak with the car sitting. If it only leaks after you drive, it could means the leak is at a pressure seal - either the front pump shaft seal, pump case o-ring or one of the piston cover large o-rings in the right side of the transmission case. Clean the transmission off with brake cleaner and compressed air (needs to be super clean). then start the engine and let it run while you watch under the car for the origin of the leak.
