Can someone give me some info on what a reasonable cost would be to replace the leaking rear seal on the transmission of this car. I understand that the tranny must be removed so it is not something I can tackle myself. Plus, there are specialized tools etc. required to do the job correctly.
The car is a dream to drive and otherwise is in mint condition. Only 136,000 original miles. What other items might it be wise to replace now while the tranny is down? Car shifts through gears so smoothly that it's almost impossible to detect the transitions, so all major parts must be in good working order. I enjoy working on these cars and do most repairs myself. I also own a 1995 300 SD Turbo diesel. Tranny work is a little out of my league, and I want the work done right. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Output shaft seal replacement not that difficult
I have done this job with the transmission in the car. Remove the driveshaft and drop the rear mount to lower the rear of the tranny. A special tool is needed to remove the nut on the rear shaft. Time should be 2 to 4 hours depending on whether or not the exhaust system needs to be dropped to get the driveshaft out.
With the drive shaft out recommend you replace the front and rear flex disks if they have never been changed (even if they look ok). Also rear transmission mount. Remember it is not mileage but rather the age that is significant. Rubber parts go south after 18 to 20 years.

Thanks much for the suggestion. Will definately make this attempt myself, and follow your recommendations about replacing old rubber parts. The information you folks are providing for us "Benz Fanatics" is amazing and greatly appreciated, I'm sure. Keep up the good work!!
