1980 240 D standard shift. fresh rebuilt engine. clutch..driveline brakes..etc. pleasure to drive. runs great.
i have a couple of turbo diesel parts cars available..that were known running with no issues (one with recent new axle shafts) would it work to remove the pumpkin from one of the turbos and stick it in the 240. it would seem that the higher geared rear end might be an advantage as far as gas mileage and engine wear. my average cruising speed is around 65 with mostly hiway driving. the axle boots look pretty rough...so i will probably be good time to make the swap when i do them.
what are disadvantages? advantages. anyone else ever try this? good idea?
This is a very good upgrade
I have do this before and recommend it to anyone with a 240D 4 speed - someone who particularly drives a lot of freeway miles. It is not just the fuel economy, but the reduction in engine noise at 65 to 70 mph that can really make driving the car much more pleasant. The only disadvantage I have found is if you try to do it behind an automatic transmission. Then acceleration gets sluggish - but behind a four speed you have more than adequate pickup. Its the only way to go. Kent Bergsma
