Running badly means poor performance. It happens sooner or later to EVERY diesel owner. The word "performance" is often used to describe how well a diesel engine runs once started. The principles discussed will cover all Mercedes diesels from the mid 1950s to the mid 1990s. Throughout this manual I will use this word to discuss a number of common problems. How performance is rated can mean different things to different people. In the following pages I will relate diesel performance to the following four criteria:

• How smooth does the engine run?

From my many years of working professionally on Mercedes diesels I have learned fuel injectors are the single most neglected maintenance item. I believe there are a number of reasons for this. Partly it may be the mystery surrounding how injectors work and what needs to be done to service and repair them. Then there is the false notion that like the engine they will last forever. And finally, it can be very expensive to have a shop replace the fuel injectors. You may even have said to yourself, the engine seems to be running fine so why bother spending the money?

Installing steel threaded spark plugs in aluminum heads is risky business. If you are not careful it is easy to damage the fragile aluminum threads. In a few cases I have seen spark plugs blow out of their holes while the engine is running. And does that ever make a loud racket! Heavy handed mechanics often cross thread the plugs during a tune-up and you wont even know it until you go to replace the plugs at some later date.

Applies to the following diesel models from 1955 to 1993: Ponton, 110, 115, 116, 123, 126, 201 and 124. Let's face it. Diesel engines make noise. Some of the clatter and knock they make is normal. Other banging and clanging noises are not.

If you have lived with your diesel for a long time, you should instinctively know what is normal. It is when you start hearing noises that you have not heard before then you should be concerned. If you haven't lived with a diesel for very long, then it is hard to know which noises are acceptable and which are not.

Applies to the following chassis: 111, 108, 109, 107, 116 and 126. Includes 3.5, 4.5, 350, 380, 450, 500, 420, and 560 V8 engines from 1970 to 1991. When Mercedes introduced their small 3.5 liter V8 in 1970 it was hailed as a technological breakthrough in automotive engine design. That same basic design was produced for over 20 years right up into the early 1990s.

The engine itself has proven to be very robust and if maintained properly will run strong for well over 300,000 miles. Time has proven though that these engines do have an achilles heel and if not attended with preventative action failure can lead to catastrophic results.
